Nicky May fell in love with clay in 1999 because of its dichotomous nature, firm yet malleable, and once fired, durable yet fragile.
Her semi-sculptural birds are a recent departure inspired by long walks along the camel estuary and the cliffs at Bude.
Observational drawing provides the basis for Nickys work allowing her to capture the rhythm and vitality of her subjects. The bird forms are developed to express a sense of birdness without necessarily being a copy of a specific bird.
Each piece if hand built, unique and may take weeks to make and most are fired to high temperatures to be frost resistant.
